What's the future of Classical Music?

So much is said about the 'death' or 'decline' of Classical Music, but it seems quite obvious to us that, like any worthwhile artform, even Classical traditions have to evolve in order to stay relevant to contemporary society.

Every aspect of our classical programming is considered in terms of how it contributes to the development of Classical traditions. We don't have much time for formal 1950s-style recitals or endless repetitions of 'blockbuster' classics just for the sake of it.

Sure, we play and record some of the greatest masterworks of the Classical canon. Some of our projects and collaborations are dedicated entirely to performing great pieces of classical music in a formal setting. But we're not precious about it. If new technological media, new musical or compositional styles, new presentation techniques, or new styles of performance practice capture our imagination, we dive right in and use them. And if that means that old ways of doing things get challenged and broken down, perhaps that's a good thing.

Now take a look at our latest Projects:

Imogen Holst: String Chamber Music (2007) ‡ * ƒ @

In Autumn 2007, Court Lane Strings will release an album of Chamber Music by Imogen Holst (daughter of Gustav Holst), to coincide with the publication of a book about the composer, celebrating 100 years since her birth. The recording will be available in October, and a mini-tour to Cheltenham, Aldeburgh and London featuring English Chamber Music works (as well as highlights from the CD) will take place in November 2007 to mark the release of the book and the album. Virtuoso Violin (2006)

The Virtuoso Violin sprung from a recital at St James Piccadilly church in London. We'd put together a concept programme of Virtuosic music - Paganini, Wieniawski, Sarasate, Kreisler - for a lunchtime concert, and the response was so enthusiastic that we toured it around the country in December 2006. Our most popular programme so far, the 'Virtuoso Violin' concert is showing at several music festivals during 2007. More Soon >>

Conflict, Hope and Joy (2004)

Our very first project, performed in London, Aldeburgh and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, was our first major programme of chamber music, featuring Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, the rarely-performed Songs on Poems by Alexander Blok, and Barber's Adagio for Strings.
